Frequently asked questions
Short answers grouped for first-time users — general, installation, then how to use the desktop app and parent portal.
General
Which computers can I use?
Sit-N-Study is a desktop app for macOS 10.14 and above, Windows 10 and above, and Ubuntu 18.04 and above. Use the Mac, Windows, or Linux button on the home page or the downloads page.
Can I use the app without a parent account?
Yes. On the login screen choose Try without registering. Study sessions and rewards stay on that computer. You will not get live progress in the parent portal until you sign in.
How do I use the app with the parent portal?
Create or sign in to the parent portal on your phone, then on the desktop app enter the parent email and passcode. Do not use Try without registering if you want the phone and computer linked.
Why is there a QR code on the downloads page?
Scan it with your phone to open https://parent.sitnstudy.com. The QR code is for parents and teachers. It is not the child app. The child still needs the desktop app installed on the computer.
The child scanned the QR code. What should they use?
The QR code opens the parent portal in a phone browser. Sit the child at the computer with the desktop app. Parents use the phone to sign in, watch progress, and set rewards.
How do I ask for early access or extra help?
Email support@sitnstudy.com from the account you want to use. Say whether you are a parent, school teacher, or private tutor, and the child's age or year level.
Installation
What happens when I click Download?
You are taken to the downloads page. The installer for the button you clicked should start automatically. If it does not, use the Mac, Windows, or Linux buttons on that page.
macOS says the app is from an unidentified developer
That is normal for a first install. In Finder, Control-click the Sit-N-Study app and choose Open, then confirm. You can also allow it under System Settings, Privacy and Security.
Windows SmartScreen blocks the installer
Choose More info, then Run anyway. Sit-N-Study is not yet widely signed, so Windows may warn the first time you install it.
How do I run the Linux download?
The Linux build is an AppImage. After it downloads, make it executable with chmod +x on the file, then run it. Ubuntu 18.04 and above is the baseline we test.
How to use
How do I open settings in guest mode?
On the awards screen, type the parent PIN on the keyboard. The default PIN is 1010. That opens Parent settings. Change the PIN under Parent PIN, then Save.
What can I change in Target and Rewards?
In Parent settings, Target and Rewards sets daily exercise targets, coins, fun-time chunk length and price, and custom coin rewards. You can also approve or decline reward requests from the child's wallet.
How do I start a break?
Open Break time in Parent settings. Set the break length in minutes, then tap Start now or End now. Fun time uses the coin prices you set under Target and Rewards.
What are celebration keywords?
Celebration keywords pick the GIF themes shown when the child earns an award. You can add keywords, test them, and optionally turn on surprise stickers.
What does Parental Control do in guest mode?
Parental Control turns kiosk mode and the App Blocker on or off. You can allow or deny specific Mac bundle IDs or Windows .exe names so only chosen apps can run during study.
How do I add study sites in guest mode?
Open Bookmarks in Parent settings. Add a URL, title, and icon. Those bookmarks appear in the left-hand list for the child to open.
How do I sign in from guest mode?
In Parent settings open Login to Parent Portal. Enter the parent email and passcode. After that, the computer is linked and you can use the phone portal for live progress.
How does the child study?
The child picks a study bookmark from the left-hand list, completes work to earn coins, then spends coins on fun time or custom rewards. Parents adjust targets and prices in Parent settings or the parent portal.
What can I control in parent portal settings?
On https://parent.sitnstudy.com, Settings includes Awards, Timers, App Settings, Notifications, Quiet Mode, and Parental Control. Home shows live progress while the desktop app is running. Use the account menu to switch child, see the passcode, or sign out.
What are the other parent portal screens?
Home is the live session. Dashboard is session history. Apps is the child's study sites. There is also a tab for incomplete or abandoned work. Some accounts also show a lesson planner, skills, chat, or logs.
